At Mare Nostrum SPA, water forms a vital part of our treatments and also provides us with our name, since the word SPA comes from the Latin expression “Salus per Aquam”. In antiquity, the natural spas of the Romans were recognised as a source of energy and health. This fame was due to the thermal waters which, for their mineral components, had beneficial effects for the human organism.

At Mare Nostrum Spa we have updated the concept of the traditional wellbeing and health of the Roman spas by applying thalassotherapy to our treatments. Thalassotherapy is a technique based on the therapeutic and relaxing properties of seawater, algae and other elements present in or related to the ocean in order to assist the human organism both physically and mentally. Its name comes from the Greek “Thalasso”, which means “sea”, and it was in fact this civilisation that was the first to transmit its discovery through Hippocrates, who recommended taking seawater baths to treat different complaints and illnesses. Some Egyptian writers also realised the health benefits of this method, and the Romans, who loved spa waters, soon saw the advantages of hydrotherapy on the body and the human mind.
